WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team could not hang on to a big first-quarter lead as the Hoyas fell 57-49 to the Seton Hall University Pirates on Wednesday morning at McDonough Arena in both teams' BIG EAST Conference opener. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 9-2 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates improve to 9-3 for the year and 1-0 in league action.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "Kudos to Seton Hall, they did a good job of being gritty and toughing it out. We always want to be the toughest team in the gym, and today Seton Hall was the toughest and they won in a dogfight. We needed to make some more layups, we missed some free throws and on the other end we sent them to the free throw line late. Missed assignments defensively was the difference, so we need to make sure we're locked in consistently. Today was a learning experience, the moment was good for us but we need everyone to be locked in so we can play Georgetown basketball for 40 minutes."
How it Happened
- The Hoyas opened the scoring with a 14-0 run sparked by a layup from senior Jada Claude, and aided by five points from senior Kelsey Ransom as the Blue & Gray was unstoppable on offense and hungry on the defensive end.
- Despite a layup from Seton Hall, Georgetown was dominant and ended the quarter on a triple from junior Yasmin Ott to own the stanza with a commanding 21-2 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action.
- The Hoyas held Seton Hall to just 8.3% (1-12) shooting in the first period.
- Seton Hall tried to chip away at the lead in the second quarter, cutting it to 13 (25-12) midway through.
- A layup from graduate student Mya Bembry against her former team stopped the momentum and the Hoyas cruised to the 31-17 lead at the end of the first half.
- The Pirates would not go away, staging a 7-0 run to cut the lead to just seven, 34-27, at the 6:48 mark in the third.
- Georgetown would regain composure on a free throw from Ransom and a traditional three-point play from junior Brianna Scott, but it would be a battle for the final 15 minutes.
- SHU answered with a 12-0 run to take the lead before a Ransom layup gave GU the 40-39 lead at the end of the third.
- The fourth quarter was fairly even as the Pirates took the lead, but GU answered with a 5-0 run to cling to the small advantage for much of the period.
- Seton Hall knotted the game at 47 with 4:01 remaining, and the Blue & Gray could not find an answer as GU eventually fell 57-49.
Of Note
- Scott led the way for the Hoyas with 15 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocks.
- Ransom added 10 points and five assists, while Bennett posted five points and a game-high 11 boards in the contest.
- The Hoyas shot 34.0% (17-50) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 34.0% (18-53) shooting by the Pirates.
- GU outrebounded SHU 40-29, and Georgetown forced 10 Pirate turnovers on four steals.
- Azana Baines Scruggs led Seton Hall with 14 points, and Micah Gray added 10 as the two Pirates in double figures.
- The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for the Hoyas.
