EVANSTON, Ill. – Senior guard
Kelsey Ransom scored her 1,000th-career point and the Georgetown University women's basketball team put together a dominant performance against the Northwestern University Wildcats winning 82-58 on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois in a nonconference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-1 on the season and the Wildcats drop to 3-5 for the year.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "I'm so proud of our team, we did a great job honoring our principles, trusting the scout and trusting what we needed to do. In the third quarter we kind of had a lull defensively, but we came back in the fourth quarter and executed. We got some big contributions from people, Victoria (Rivera) was amazing in the first quarter knocking down shots, of course Kelsey and of course Grace (Bennett) were both great. Brianna Scott was tremendous, Mya Bembry was amazing defensively. I think it was a total team effort and I'm proud of them for doing it and doing it together."
How it Happened
- Georgetown owned the first quarter as sophomore Victoria Rivera hit a quartet of triples before the five-minute mark.
- Along with Rivera's hot hand, Ransom caused problems for the Wildcats and hit her first four free throws of the contest to hit the 1,000 point milestone.
- Northwestern had no answer for the Hoyas on offense or defense as GU built the lead to as much as 13 on a pair of free throws by junior Brianna Scott.
- GU kept rolling and held the 22-13 advantage at the end of the first period.
- The Hoyas continued to push in the second quarter, moving ahead by as much as 16 on multiple occasions.
- With 2:30 remaining, the Blue & Gray staged a 9-2 run capped off with a triple from graduate student Alex Cowan just before the buzzer to make it 51-27 at the break.
- Northwestern looked to chip away at the lead, but the Hoyas stood strong and continued to score on offense as well as getting stops on the defensive end of the floor.
- At the end of three periods, GU still had the significant 67-47 advantage.
- The comeback would never come for the Wildcats as Georgetown continued to push and cruised to the 82-58 victory.
