Georgetown Comeback Falls Short at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in a close one to the Butler University Bulldogs 58-56 Wednesday evening at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. With the loss, the Blue & Gray falls to 12-14 overall and 5-12 in BIG EAST play.

How it Happened
  • Butler (9-17, 4-13 BIG EAST) took an early lead, but a layup from junior Jada Claude and a triple by freshman Victoria Rivera cut it to one, 8-7.
  • Buckets from freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy and sophomore Ariel Jenkins made it 11-10 at the end of the first period.
  • The Bulldogs' Rachel McLimore staged an 8-0 run of her own early in the second quarter and BU would stretch the lead to as much as 11.
  • Rivera hit a late 3-pointer to cut it to six, but BU answered with a triple of its own to make it 31-22 at the break.
  • A 6-0 Hoya run featuring junior Kelsey Ransom and graduate student Kristina Moore midway through the third quarter cut it to three as the Blue & Gray looked to move ahead.
  • Despite momentum, that opportunity would not come as Butler had an answer for every Hoya bucket and GU trailed 45-38 at the end of the third.
  • The Georgetown press was effective forcing turnovers and a layup from Fauntleroy sparked an 11-0 run to give Georgetown its first lead of the game 49-47 with 6:35 remaining.
  • The lead would go back and forth and in the final minute, the Hoya press got one more steal as senior Graceann Bennett took the pass. Bennett would connect on a three-point play on the other end to put the Hoyas ahead with 26 seconds left.
  • Butler matched with a three-point play on the other end, and the last second chance for the Blue & Gray was short as GU fell 58-56.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 12 points, while Bennett added 10 and a squad-high five boards.
  • The rookie pair of Fauntleroy and Rivera scored 10 points apiece to round out those in double figures.
  • Fauntleroy also had five assists and as many steals in the contest.
  • The Hoyas shot 46.9% (23-49) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 42.9% (18-42) shooting by the Bulldogs.
  • GU was outrebounded by Butler 30-22 in the game, and Georgetown forced 23 Bulldog turnovers on 14 steals.
  • McLimore led BU with 21 points as the lone Bulldog in double figures.
