Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Ezewiro’s Breakout Game Not Enough as Georgetown Falls at No. 20/17 Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  Bradley Ezewiro had a breakout game tallying 19 points on an impressive 8-of-9 performance from the floor but it was not enough as the Georgetown University men's basketball team fell 74-62 to the No. 20/17 Providence College Friars on Wednesday night. Ezewiro led all scorers at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island.

ON THE RECORD
"They're probably one of the most physical teams that we have in our conference. Ed (Cooley) has done an outstanding job at getting them to buy in and play the way that he wants them to play. They have some older guys who have been around for a while and they play together." - Head Coach Patrick Ewing  on Providence's squad

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ezewiro's career-high 19 points came from eight made field goals and a perfect 3-for-3 effort from the free throw line. Coming off the bench, the game marked his first time in double figures as the sophomore also tacked on a career-best three blocks.
  • Primo Spears and Brandon Murray tallied 18 and 16 points, respectively, to round out those in double figures. Spears paced the offense with seven helpers while Murray grabbed a squad-best seven rebounds.
  • Georgetown (6-19, 1-13 BIG EAST) shot 40.0% (22-55) from the floor. No. 20/17 Providence shot 43.8% (28-64) from the floor.
  • The Friars outrebounded the Hoyas 38-33.
  • The Blue & Gray forced nine Friar turnovers but committed 10 of its own.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas got on the board first with Spears getting things going on the night. The no. 20 Friars (18-6, 10-3 BE) took a small 9-5 lead before the Blue & Gray tied it up on back-to-back buckets from Spears and Akok.
  • Another PC bucket pushed the Friars ahead but Ezewiro came up with a bucket and drew the foul, converting the conventional three-point play for GU to regain the lead, 12-11.
  • Both teams kept battling and the score was knotted again at 16 (11:56). However, the Friars tallied seven unanswered to give some breathing room before eventually pulling away 39-30 at the break.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Spears and Murray closed the gap back to nine (46-37) but PC strung together eight straight before another Spears bucket could break up the run.
  • Providence extended its lead to 15 (66-51) but back-to-back Ezewiro dunks kept the Hoyas alive but time was short for the Blue & Gray as 5:40 remained in the second frame.
  • With late free throws, No. 20 Providence sealed the 74-62 victory.

OF NOTE
  • Qudus Wahab scored his 1,000th collegiate point as he sunk a free throw at 19:28 in the second half.
  • Primo Spears finished the game with seven assists. He is now three away from making Georgetown's all-time top 25 for single-season assists. Dwayne Bryant (1986-87) and Michael Jackson (1983-84) are both tied for 25th with 137.
