Late Run Pushes Hoyas Past George Washington

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team capitalized on a run in the top of the sixth to down George Washington University 1-0 in the District on Wednesday afternoon at the George Washington Softball Complex. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-20 overall while GW drops to 11-13 on the year.

Head Coach Pat Conlan
  • "Today's game was a pitcher's duel. I thought both pitchers threw good games, but we were able to manufacture a run late to secure the win. Brooke (Plonka) was terrific on the mound with 13 strikeouts and really never gave GW an opportunity to put anything together offensively. Our last two wins are good momentum heading to Arizona this weekend."
How it Happened
  • The bats were quiet for both squads early on as the pitchers went to work. In the bottom of the second, graduate student Brooke Plonka made quick work of GW with three-consecutive strikeouts to keep it scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, George Washington was threatening with a runner on second. However, Plonka struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning with a runner left on base.
  • GW had runners in scoring position again in the bottom of the fifth, but a pop up to first and another K from Plonka helped the Hoyas out of the jam.
  • The sixth inning was where it happened as Morgan Zamora led off with a double to right center. Zamora advanced to third on the next at bat, and then scampered home on a ground out from Kiaris Alvarado Rojas to the shortstop.
  • Plonka would go three up, three down in the bottom half of the inning as it all came down to the seventh.
  • A fielder's choice for GW got the Hoya at third as GU looked to add a security run. In the bottom of the seventh, GW had runners on second and third with two outs but a strikeout from Julia Parker sealed the 1-0 victory for the Blue & Gray.
Of Note
  • Zamora was 2-for-3 at the dish with one run scored, and Brittany Lew was also 2-for-3.
  • The Hoya pitching staff combined for an impressive 14 strikeouts and allowed just four hits.
  • Plonka took the win with 13 K's to her credit.
  • Parker was given the save with one strikeout in the seventh.
