Hoyas Drop Doubleheader at Bear Down Fiesta

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of games in the second day of the Bear Down Fiesta in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday. In the first game of the day, the Hoyas saw a 4-3 decision to the University of San Diego. In game two, GU fell 12-4 to the No. 20 University of Arizona. With the loss, GU drops to 8-23 on the season.

Game 1
Georgetown 3, University of San Diego 4
  • The Hoyas opened up the bottom of the first with five-consecutive baserunners and got to San Diego early. Cameron Kondo started things with a bunt single, followed by another single by Morgan Zamora and the two were both brought home by a Mae Forshey two-run triple to right center to put the Hoyas up 2-0.
  • After a walk to Kayla Dunn in the next at bat, Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza reached on a throwing error which scored Forshey to give the Hoyas a 3-0 advantage.
  • After recording only one baserunner through the first three innings, San Diego battled back in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally of two singles followed by a three-run home run to tie things up 3-3.
  • San Diego loaded up the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth, but Julia Parker nabbed a big strikeout to keep things tied up and get out of the jam.
  • In the top of the seventh San Diego continued to get on base, eventually getting a run through on a two-out RBI single to gain a 4-3 lead. San Diego further loaded the bases, but Parker was able to limit the damage by forcing a pop out.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Zamora and Forshey recorded singles to keep the Hoyas alive, but San Diego was able to get the final out to secure the 4-3 win.
Of Note
  • The top of the order had a great game at the plate as Kondo went 2-for-4 with a run, while Zamora went 3-for-3 with a run scored as well.
  • Forshey helped to get the Hoyas on the board, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI on a two-run triple.
  • The Hoyas had nine hits overall with one error and seven runners left on base.
  • In the circle, Brooke Plonka threw three one-hit innings before getting into trouble in the fourth, finishing with 3.2 innings pitched, three earned runs, two strikeouts and was tagged with the loss. Parker pitched 3.1 innings in relief with no earned runs and three strikeouts.
Game 2
Georgetown 4, No. 20 University of Arizona 12
  • Arizona struck first as a pair singles and a sac fly allowed the Wildcats to take the 3-0 lead.
  • The Hoyas would answer the next inning as single from Claire Turner started it out. Turner would steal second and the Wildcats walked Kondo to put two runners on with Zamora at the plate.
  • The graduate student would send the ball over the left field wall for the three-run homer to tie the game at 3-3. It marked her third homer of the season and first of the weekend.
  • Arizona answered right back in the bottom of the inning loading the bases and seeing a pair of doubles and a sac fly score three runners to make it 6-3. Two home runs in the fourth then added to the Hoya deficit as Arizona went on a tear to make it 11-3 at the end of the inning.
  • Georgetown threatened in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third on a Zamora two-out double. Forshey sent a single to left field on the 0-2 pitch to score Kondo to make it 11-4.
  • Arizona added one in the bottom of the inning to end the game 12-4.
Of Note
  • Zamora had a big game at the plate going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored as well as a double and a home run.
  • Forshey added a 1-for-3 performance with one RBI.
  • The Hoyas had four hits overall with one error and three runners left on base.
  • In the circle, the Hoya pitchers combined for three strikeouts and 11 earned runs. Plonka took the loss in the game.
Up Next
  • Georgetown will return home and back to BIG EAST Conference play as GU hosts the Providence College Friars in a three-game series this week. Wednesday's contest will begin at 3 p.m., with Thursday featuring a doubleheader with games at noon and 2:30 p.m.
