WASHINGTON – A record-setting day from graduate student
Brooke Plonka helped the Georgetown University softball team to a 1-0 victory over the Coppin State University Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at the Washington Nationals Baseball Academy in nonconference action. Plonka set the program record in strikeouts with 15, while also pitching the first perfect game in program history. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 11-24 overall.
Head Coach Pat Conlan
- "Brooke was masterful on the mound from the first pitch today. Throwing a perfect game with 15 K's is a tremendous accomplishment. We were able to get runners on base, but struggled to get clutch hits so thankful Cam (Kondo) brought the big stick today to help give us the win. Today was exactly what we needed to get ready for a big series with Creighton this weekend."
How it Happened
- Plonka controlled the game from the beginning with eight-consecutive strikeouts through the first nine batters of the game, taking it through the third inning.
- Georgetown would leave two runners on in the bottom second as Plonka and the Hoya defense put together a masterful performance.
- The difference in the game came in the bottom of the third, when graduate student Cameron Kondo hit a solo shot over the wall to make it 1-0.
- As Plonka continued to hold the Eagles, the Blue & Gray would leave two runners stranded in the bottom of the fourth as GU looked to tack on another.
- The additional run would not come, but the impressive play from Plonka in the circle and stops from the defense allowed the Hoyas to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
- Plonka's perfect game marked the first in program history, and her 15 strikeouts broke a program record.
- The Hoyas tallied eight hits in the game, and Kondo led the way with a 1-for-2 performance as well as one run scored and an RBI.
