Hoyas Win BIG EAST Series Against Creighton, Split Games Two and Three

WASHINGTON – Following the second game of the series getting halted on Saturday, the Georgetown University softball team took care of business early with a five-inning 9-1 win over Creighton to complete the second game on Sunday morning and seal the series victory. The Hoyas split the games following a 7-4 setback in the final contest of the series. Georgetown improves to 13-25 overall and 7-8 in BIG EAST play while Creighton is now 18-24 overall and 4-11 in league action.

HEAD COACH PAT CONLAN
"We came ready to play today. I love the fight in our team. While the results are not what we wanted in game three, I'm happy with the series win. I love the way we are competing and getting better every time we step on the field." - Head Coach Pat Conlan

SERIES GAME 2: GEORGETOWN 9, CREIGHTON 1 (5 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown was the first on the board as a Kayla Dunn single pushed Cameron Kondo across the plate with two outs. Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza was up next and an infield error pushed her to second while Dunn was able to come home as the Hoyas took a 2-0 lead in the first.
  • The Bluejays cut the deficit in half with a run in the second but a sac fly from Dunn gave way for Morgan Zamora to score to push the lead back to two (3-1) in the third.
  • The Hoyas tacked on another run in the fourth with a home run from Dayanara Campos for the 4-1 lead.
  • With runners on first and second, CU made a pitching change but it would not stop the Hoya momentum as Mae Forshey sent a single to left center to score Kondo and give the Hoyas a 5-1 lead.
  • Three batters later with the bases loaded, Sophia Scarangella stepped up to the plate and on the second pitch, launched a grand slam to right field to clear the bases and give the Hoyas a 9-1 lead to end the game after five innings.

OF NOTE
  • Coming in as a pinch hitter, Scarangella was 1-for-1 at the plate with the grand slam giving her four RBIs. Dunn was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and scored one run. Campos was 1-for-1 with one run and one RBI.
  • Morgan Zamora recorded a pair of hits (2-2) while Claire Turner added one (1-2). Kondo scored a pair of runs while Gabby Nemarich, Gianna Sciullo and Vasquez-Inzunza each tacked on one.
  • Brooke Plonka took the W in the circle, pitching five innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out five and walking one.

SERIES GAME 3: GEORGETOWN 4, CREIGHTON 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas kept the offense going into the final game of the series with a Forshey double pushing the quick-footed Zamora across the plate. Dunn followed that up with a single through the right side to score Forshey and give the Blue & Gray a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
  • Following a few scoreless innings, Creighton made up the difference and then some with a grand slam in the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage.
  • The Hoyas were looking to make another comeback and with runners on first and second, a Zamora triple to center field proved to be the equalizer as a pair of Hoyas crossed the plate and leveled the game at 4-4.
  • The Bluejays found the retort in the top of the seventh adding another three runs to take a 7-4 lead. GU could not mount another comeback as the 7-4 score held through the final three outs.

OF NOTE
  • Zamora was 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and scored one run. Forshey and Dunn each tallied an RBI while Forshey was 1-for-4 at the plate with a run and Dunn went 2-for-3. Kondo and Turner each score a run.
  • Julia Parker took the loss in the circle following four innings of work.
