Hoyas Fall at St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team lost a tough one 3-2 to the St. John's University Red Storm on Friday in Queens, New York in the first of a three-game series in BIG EAST Conference play. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 14-26 overall and 7-9 in the BIG EAST.

How it Happened
  • It was a quiet first inning with both teams getting runners on and the Hoya defense coming up with outs including a brilliant throw from catcher Mae Forshey to shortstop Morgan Zamora to get a runner stealing second.
  • Following six total batters in the second, it was GU that began to find life in the top of the third as Kacy Lyman hit a double and then advanced to third with one out.
  • St. John's (16-24, 5-11 BIG EAST) would get two of the next three out as Georgetown left a pair stranded.
  • Both teams got quick outs in the following innings until the top of the fifth when the Hoyas loaded the bases with one out.
  • Zamora would reach on a fielder's choice, but the play at the plate kept the Hoyas from getting the run and GU finished the inning with three runners left on base.
  • Kayla Dunn led off the sixth with a solo shot over the left center wall to put GU up 1-0, and a pair of singles put two more runners on but GU would not see either cross the plate.
  • St. John's answered right back in the bottom of the inning as the Red Storm worked their way around the bases eventually scoring three runs leading 3-1 going into the final inning.
  • Cameron Kondo led the inning off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and an SJU error allowed her to score on the next at bat.
  • Unfortunately, the next Hoya would hit into a double play and Georgetown could not find the tying run, eventually falling 3-2.
Of Note
  • Kondo led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run and a double.
  • Dunn managed the 2-for-4 performance with a home run to her credit.
  • Dayanara Campos was 2-for-3, and Lyman went 1-for-3 with a double.
  • Dunn took the loss in the circle with six strikeouts in the game.
