Softball Drops Heartbreaker at George Mason

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team lost a tough one, 3-2, in 10 innings to the George Mason University Patriots on Wednesday in Fairfax, Virginia. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 15-28 overall.

How it Happened
  • George Mason (29-17) threatened in the bottom of the first with runners in scoring position, but the Hoyas were able to get the out on a fly out to Claire Turner in center field.
  • Georgetown countered in the second with Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza at third after a double to right center and two outs, but GMU managed to secure the third out of the inning.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, the Blue & Gray converted a double play to keep the game scoreless.
  • A pair of hits in the top of the third from Turner and Cameron Kondo put runners at second and third, however, the defense was able to get the fly out once again.
  • The Patriots would get on the board first as a single from Sydney Bales started her off, followed by a steal and a run to third before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
  • Georgetown answered in the top of the sixth as a walk and hits from Sophia Scarangella and Gianna Sciullo allowed pinch runner Kiaris Alvarado Rojas to tie the game at 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Mason looked to add another with a runner on third. A looking strikeout from Brooke Plonka would keep it knotted at one as the teams eventually went into extra innings.
  • With the international tie breaker on in the top of the tenth, a Georgetown runner was placed on second and a double from Mae Forshey stayed fair allowing GU to score for the go-ahead run, but Forshey was called out trying to stretch the double to a triple.
  • George Mason would match in the bottom of the inning on a deep ball to right field, and a walk would put the winning run on base as a hit down the left field line allowed her to score making the final 3-2.
Of Note
  • Kondo led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double, while Vasquez-Inzunza was 2-for-5 with a double and Turner went 2-for-4.
  • Forshey managed a 1-for-5 performance with an RBI, and Sciullo was 1-for-4 with an RBI to her credit.
  • Plonka took the loss in the circle managing five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Avery Wissmar started the game for GU tallying one strikeout in five innings pitched.
