Hoyas Fall to Providence in Series Finale

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team could not find an answer after a big inning for the Providence College Friars in a 12-8 loss to the visitors on Thursday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. GU lost the game, but won the series 2-1 after a pair of victories on Wednesday. With the loss, GU drops to 10-24 on the season and 5-7 in BIG EAST play.

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board in the opening inning when Morgan Zamora doubled to left field to get on base and with two runners on, Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza hit a long single to right center to make it 1-0.
  • After three up, three down in the top of the second, the bottom half of the inning belonged to the Blue & Gray.
  • A single to right center from Cameron Kondo allowed Claire Turner to cross the plate.
  • Kondo advanced around the bases before Kaitlyn Dunn stepped up and hit a two-RBI single to right.
  • This was followed by a double from Inzunza scoring Dunn and Mae Forshey to make it 6-0 at the end of the inning.
  • The Friars (11-22, 4-11 BIG EAST) struck in the top of the fourth with a huge nine-run inning, including a grand slam, to take the 9-6 lead.
  • Kondo began the bottom of the inning with a solo shot over the fence to pull GU within two, 9-7.
  • In the top of the seventh, Providence continued to find hits adding three more in the inning.
  • Kacy Lyman would hit to the shortstop allowing Brittany Lew to cross the plate in the bottom of the inning, but the rally would not happen as GU fell 12-8.
Of Note
  • Kondo led the way for the Blue & Gray with a 2-for-4 performance as well as two runs and two RBIs.
  • Inzunza was 2-for-4 with a trio of RBIs, while Dunn went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
  • Lyman hit 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Zamora rounded it out with a 1-for-4 performance and two runs scored.
