WASHINGTON – Matthew Payamps and Parker Stokes closed the 2023 track & field season with semifinal appearances in their respective events at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The four-day meet, held June 7-10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, is the final event of the collegiate track & field season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Competing in the first of a two-heat semifinal, Stokes was among the lead pack of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. On the bell lap, as the field found another gear, Stokes was struggling to close the race. He finished seventh in the heat with a time of 9:44.69 and had the last of two qualifying times going into the second heat. With the second heat going out faster than the first, Stokes was pushed out of the advancing 12 times and finished 14th overall in the field.
• In the second of a two-heat 1,500-meter semifinal, Payamps was staying with the pack through the first 700 meters but on the third time around, Payamps was getting pushed to the back of the front pack. The bell lap proved to be too much as he finished with a 3:40.96 to finish ninth in the heat and 16th overall.
