Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 17 Hoyas Fall at No. 7 Stanford

WASHINGTON – The No. 17/12 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to No. 7/8 Stanford University Cardinal 5-1 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, California. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 1-1 on the season, while the Cardinal start the year 2-0.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Credit to Stanford, they have a good team this year and they won the battle of styles today. They imposed their brand on the game for longer periods than we did, and took their chances clinically. We are going to learn from today's game and move on quickly for a big week ahead."
How it Happened
  • Stanford had some good looks early, but it was Georgetown that opened the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute from sophomore Jacob Murrell. The forward received a long pass on a counter and took a touch to get by a defender before firing into the net to make it 1-0.
  • As play continued, the Hoya defense was tested but stood strong.
  • Stanford evened the score in the 22nd minute when a ball was served in and it bounced off two Cardinal heads before finding Noah Adnan in front of the net who headed it in to make it 1-1.
  • The Cardinal added another in the 33rd minute when a Georgetown clearance went to the top of the box, and Will Reilly hit a volley back in to put Stanford on top 2-1.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Tenzing Manske came up with a big stop late in the half and the Hoyas went into the break trailing 2-1.
  • The second half belonged to Stanford as they scored just 34 seconds into the second half and never looked back.
  • Georgetown would be unable to get anything going in the second period, and the Cardinal added goals in the 60th and 89th minute for the 5-1 final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot 12-5 as the Hoyas had just two shots on goal, while the Cardinal tallied six.
  • GU was awarded three corner kicks to Stanford's five in the game.
  • Manske took the loss in the net with one save for the day.
  • It marked the second time in as many games that Murrell scored for the Blue & Gray.
