Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Linhares’ Two Goals Leads No. RV/12 Georgetown Past No. 8/8 Pitt

WASHINGTON – The No. RV/12 Georgetown University men's soccer team, fueled by a huge game from senior midfielder Kyle Linhares, upended No. 8/8 University of Pittsburgh Panthers at Shaw Field in GU's home opener in Washington, D.C. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 1-1-1 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "It was really good to see the performance today against a good Pitt team. They're an ACC team, ranked in the top 10 and they went to the College Cup last year, and we came into the game with a lot of question marks about what the mentality would be coming off of a big loss against a good Stanford team. Right off the kickoff, I was really, really pleased with how we played. We were on the front foot and we had the right mentality to play the game how we wanted to play it."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board first as sophomore Max Viera tracked down the ball and sent it across the box to an awaiting Linhares who hit a one-time volley past the outstretched arms of Pitt keeper Cabral Carter to make it 1-0 in the sixth minute.
  • The Blue & Gray would continue to look dangerous, and a corner kick set up another scoring opportunity for the Hoyas.
  • In the 21st minute, a ball was served in and tracked down by sophomore Zach Zengue who hit it across the box. Junior Maximus Jennings challenged a header in the middle and it went to senior captain Kenny Nielsen on the left side who found the back of the net to put the Hoyas ahead 2-0 which would stand at the half.
  • Georgetown didn't let up in the second period scoring just three minutes in.
  • Junior Kieran Sargeant played a perfect ball upfield to Linhares who evaded two defenders and shot to the far post with a clinical finish for the 3-0 score.
  • The Blue & Gray wasn't done and Linhares continued to dominate the action when he slipped a ball to junior Joe Buck who was wide open and fired to add another to the scoreboard.
  • Late in the game, Pitt would get on the board with a goal from Luka Kozomara who dribbled to the endline and used the angle to get it past the Georgetown defense for the goal.
  • That would be the end of the scoring as Georgetown stood strong for the 4-1 final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Pitt 11-7 as the Hoyas had five shots on goal, while the Panthers tallied one.
  • GU was awarded six corner kicks to Pitt's one in the game.
  • Senior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe took the win in the net despite no saves for the day.
  • The first goal of the game marked the second time this season that Viera found Linhares to open the scoring after the same combo found the back of the net in the Santa Clara victory.
  • The victory was Linhares' first multi-goal match of his career.
