Football Opens 2023 Campaign at Home Against Marist

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team will open the 2023 season on the Hilltop against the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday, September 2. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. at Cooper Field.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • GU will look to open the 2023 campaign on a winning note, having won five of their last six season openers. In the 2022 season opener the Hoyas knocked off Marist on the road 43-12. 
  • For the first time in program history, the Blue & Gray will be led by two junior captains VeRon Garrison and Kaysen Mahuka-Kaawa
  • The Hoyas return four of their nine All-Patriot League selections in Talati Polamalu, Mason Gudger, Wedner Cadet and Brock Biestek
  • Cadet along with Ibri Harrell and Mateen Ibirogba were selected to the 2023 Patriot League Preseason All-League Team. For the 2022 season, Cadet was ranked fifth in the FCS with 125 return yards on interceptions while Ibirogba finished second among freshmen in the FCS with 6.5 total sacks, the most by a freshmen under Heach Coach Rob Sgarlata
  • Tyler Knoop will get the start as the quarterbacks for the Hoyas. Last season, the Texas native played behind Pierce Holley and registered nine completions for 120 passing yards and also collected 74 rushing yards for two touchdowns. 

ABOUT THE RED FOXES
  • Marist put forth a  4-7 season with a 4-4 record in conference play in 2022. 
  • Head Coach Jim Parady, the longest-tenured head coach in Division I football, enters his 32nd season with Marist. 
  • Marist will be led by Preseason All-Pioneer League selections in linebacker Mike Arrigton and long snapper Justin Iaccio.  

THE MATCHUP
  • For the second year in a row the Hoyas will take on the Red Foxes in the season opener after earning a 43-12 victory in 2022. GU holds the advantage with an 18-5 record against Marist. 
  • The Hoyas have won three straight against Marist with a 43-3 victory in 2019 and a 39-14 win in 2018.
  • Last time these two teams battled, Joshua Stakely scored two touchdowns and ran for 123 yards on 24 attempts. Jimmy Kibble scored his first collegiate touchdown while Wedner Cadet tallied his first interception on the Hilltop.
