WASHINGTON – The No. RV/12 Georgetown University men's soccer team managed a 1-0 victory over the Seton Hall University Pirates on Friday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J. in both squads/ BIG EAST Conference opener. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 3-1-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Pirates went to 3-2-1 for the year as well as 0-1 in BIG EAST action.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Winning on the road in the BIG EAST is always difficult. This team really needed a 1-0 win, a shutout in a tight game against a good opponent. This was a growth moment for our group to build upon for the rest of the year and I'm super excited how the game played out."
How it Happened
- The Hoyas got on the board in the 16th minute when senior Marlon Tabora used some fancy footwork from the right side to take it into the box and fire. His shot was saved, and the deflection went to sophomore Jacob Murrell who hit a left-footed volley back in. An SHU defender tried to make the goal-live save, but the ball ricocheted in to make it 1-0.
- Georgetown would continue to push, but the best chance was in the final seconds of the half when a shot from the Pirates was inches wide as GU stayed ahead 1-0 at the break.
- Early in the second half, the Blue & Gray was tested again as senior captain Kenny Nielsen was able to stand up a 1v1 and settle the match.
- Georgetown would have chances, and midway through the period Hoya keeper Ryan Schewe would make a stop off of a hard shot from the left side.
- The Hoyas controlled the pace and held on for the eventual 1-0 victory.
Of Note
- Georgetown and Seton Hall managed six shots apiece, as the Hoyas had three shots on goal, while the Pirates tallied one.
