Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Down No. 9 Dukes, 2-0

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the No. 9 James Madison University Dukes on Tuesday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. in non-conference action. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-1-1 on the season, while the Dukes fall to 4-2-2 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "This is always a nervy game since the league has started, it's midweek and you're playing against one of the top teams in the country. You're never sure what kind of performance you're going to get from the guys, but I thought we competed well, fought well and had a couple of heady goals. But one of the biggest pieces of today is the second-consecutive shutout for the team, especially against a JMU team that causes a lot of problems. So that was encouraging for where we want to be."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring as they have every game this season. In the 14th minute, Diego Letayf sent a free kick from the midfield sideline to the center of the park  for Jacob Murrell who got in behind the backline. Murrell fired on the flat footed Dukes to make it 1-0.
  • Georgetown would continue to push, and it looked as though the Hoyas would score again in the 25th minute when Marlon Tabora had an open shot in the box, but his strike clanged off of the crossbar.
  • The Blue & Gray would hold on through the first 45 going into the break leading 1-0.
  • JMU looked dangerous early in the second period, but the Hoyas managed to pick up a second goal and get some breathing room.
  • In the 60th minute, Joe Buck served in a ball on a pass from freshman Eric Howard. A defender redirected it in to make it 2-0.
  • As the GU defense buckled down, Georgetown comfortably cruised to the 2-0 shutout.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by James Madison 12-6, and the Hoyas had three shots on goal while the Dukes managed the same.
  • GU was awarded three corner kicks to JMU's six in the game.
  • Sophomore Tenzing Manske took the win in the net with three saves for the day and the shutout.
