WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team (2-1) fell 23-20 in a tight game to Stonehill on Saturday afternoon on Cooper Field.
"This afternoon was a good back and forth game," said Head Coach
Rob Sgarlata. " There are a number of positives and learning opportunities from this afternoon. I love how our team stayed unified throughout the game and am looking foward to preparing for our game against Columbia this upcoming weekend."
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Joshua Stakely ran for 105 yards while also making four catches for 36 yards and two touchdowns.
- Tyler Knoop completed 19 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns.
- The Hoya defense tallied one sack, one broken up pass and one blocked punt. GU totaled six tackles for loss and was led by Naiteitei Mose with eight tackles, including five solo and three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stonehill got on the board first with a rushing touchdown from Jermain Corbett in the Skyhawks opening drive.
- After being held scoreless in the first, the Hoyas tied the score 7-7 when Stakely caught a 14-yard touchdown pass.
- The Skyhawks responded in the following drive with another rushing touchdown from Corbett but were denied the extra point by a block from VeRon Garrison.
- At the end of the second quarter, Knoop completed a four-yard touchdown pass to Nick Dunneman to tie the game 13-13 at halftime.
- Stonehill held possession of the ball for the opening nine minutes of the third quarter and grabbed the 20-13 lead after Chris Domercant caught a 12-yard touchdown pass.
- The Hoyas responded again with a 19-yard touchdown pass caught by Stakely to end the third 20-20.
- In the fourth quarter Stonehill made a field goal with 8:44 remaining to earn the lead 23-20. The Hoyas were held scoreless in the fourth and fell to Stonehill 23-20.
NEXT GAME
The Hoyas will hit the road next week to take on Columbia in the battle of the Lou Little Trophy on Saturday, September 23 with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
