First Half Goals Propel Hoyas Past Xavier

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Xavier University Musketeers 3-1 on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati, Ohio. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-1-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play, while the Musketeers fall to 4-3-1 for the year and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Coming into a place like this, Xavier is so well organized and so well coached and it's hard. The guys managed a really hard-fought game. We were really efficient in the first half, the goals that went in helped a ton and I thought we had three fantastic goals and were close to scoring some more. In the second half, it was a little harder to keep that going but we were very happy to see it out on the road."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas have scored early in almost every match this season, and Saturday was no different as the Blue & Gray hit the crossbar, and then sophomore Zach Zengue got GU on the board in the ninth minute.
  • Classmate Jacob Murrell sent a low ball bouncing across the box to the back post, and Zengue was there to fire it in to make it 1-0.
  • Ten minutes later, it was Murrell by himself this time as the sophomore dribbled through the Xavier defense to shoot to the far post from the left side to give GU the 2-0 advantage.
  • Zengue continued to look dangerous and scored the brace on a header from the same spot as his previous goal. Kieran Sargeant assisted on the score in the 25th minute as the Hoyas held the commanding 3-0 lead.
  • Late in the first period, Xavier would find the back of the net from the left side to make the score 3-1 at the half.
  • Georgetown would continue to look dangerous and both teams had chances in the second half.
  • However, neither would pick up another score as the match ended at 3-1 after 90 minutes of action.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Xavier 12-9, and the Hoyas had six shots on goal while the Musketeers managed four.
  • GU was awarded five corner kicks to XU's one in the game.
  • Senior Ryan Schewe took the win in the net with three saves for the day.
