No. 12/9 Georgetown Blanks Butler 5-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 12/9 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Butler University Bulldogs 5-0 on Friday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field in GU's BIG EAST home opener. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-1-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-6-1 for the year and 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "To have five different goal scorers is important for this team and has really been what this team is about this year. Getting the shutout against the attacking pieces that Butler has was really important for us today, but at the end of the day, it's three points in the BIG EAST so we'll take it."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated possession in the first half as the Blue & Gray was pressing, forcing the Bulldog defense to come up with stops.
  • The difference came right at the top of the box in the 31st minute when junior Kieran Sargeant slipped a ball through to sophomore Jacob Murrell who took a touch to spin around his defender to shoot. With the ball rolling dangerously close to the goal line, senior Marlon Tabora came charging in to finish the play and put the Hoyas ahead 1-0.
  • That score would stand at the half with the Blue & Gray ahead.
  • Georgetown would search for chances in the second half, and doubled the score in the 52nd minute on a goal from Murrell.
  • The sophomore sent a cross looking for Zach Zengue, but the pass bounced off of a defender's foot and into the goal to make it 2-0.
  • Freshman Eric Howard added his first-career goal in the 67th minute when a pass from the right side from Marlon Tabora was sent to the middle to an open Howard who connected past the keeper to keep it rolling at 3-0.
  • The goals kept coming for the Blue & Gray this time down the left side as the combo of Sargeant and Tabora centered the ball for junior Cole Parete to slide in and connect for the 4-0 advantage in the 76th minute.
  • Georgetown added another in the 81st minute as Howard lofted a ball to the back post and he found the head of junior Maximus Jennings to make the score 5-0 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Butler 19-6, and the Hoyas had eight shots on goal while the Bulldogs managed one.
  • GU was awarded eight corner kicks to BU's three in the game.
  • Senior Ryan Schewe took the shutout in the net with one save for the day.
  • Five goals are the most that GU has scored this season. The last time the Blue & Gray tallied five was in a 5-2 victory over Temple during the 2022 season.
