Hoyas Drop a Heartbreaker to No. 21/20 Bluejays

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in a close 77-72 decision to the No. 21/20 Creighton University Bluejays on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 14-5 on the season and 4-4 in league play, while the Bluejays improve to 15-3 for the year and 6-2 in the conference.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We fought hard. In the third quarter, we went to work and cut the lead but we have to make winning plays. We needed to get the ball, understand assignments and not allow easy baskets. Kudos to Creighton, Coach Flannery does a great job with his group. We're going to take this game and learn from it, learn what it takes to play against a tournament team."
How it Happened
  • Creighton started out hot from outside, but it was sophomore Victoria Rivera that kept the Hoyas in the game scoring eight of GU's first 10 points.
  • The Bluejays continued to hit, but Georgetown stayed right with them as the posts began to work down low to keep it a two-possession game.
  • A layup from senior Jada Claude in the final seconds of the first quarter made it 25-21 in favor of the Jays at the end of one.
  • Both squads cooled in the second quarter and the Hoyas would stay within striking distance thanks to a pair of layups from junior Kelsey Ransom.
  • Midway through the period, Creighton would stage a 10-0 run, building the lead to 41-27 before a triple from Claude stopped the momentum.
  • GU would go into the break trailing 43-32.
  • Early in the second half, a 6-2 run by graduate student Graceann Bennett pulled the Hoyas within five 47-42.
  • Georgetown would continue to chip away at the deficit as Claude's third triple of the contest forced a Creighton timeout with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Out of the break, the Hoyas got the stop and a putback from junior Brianna Scott knotted the contest at 51. In the final minute, a post up from Ransom gave GU its first lead of the game at 54-53.
  • The teams would end the third period tied at 55 apiece.
  • The lead went back and forth early in the final stanza, but a 3-pointer by the Jays at 5:54 gave Creighton an advantage it would not relinquish.
  • The Blue & Gray cut it to a three-point game on six different occasions down the stretch, but could not find the tying bucket to eventually fall 77-72.
Of Note
  • Scott led the way for the Hoyas with 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds as well as four assists.
  • Ransom managed 14 points and six assists, while Claude tallied a season-best 14 points as well as four rebounds.
  • Rivera and Bennett rounded out those in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 46.2% (30-65) from the field, and Georgetown allowed 53.6% (30-56) shooting by the Bluejays.
  • GU outrebounded CU 35-26, and Georgetown forced eight Bluejay turnovers on four steals.
  • Lauren Jensen scored 21 points, and Morgan Maly added 20 as two of the four Bluejays in double figures.
