Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Heartbreaker in Queens as Hoyas Fall 57-56

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team staged a fourth-quarter comeback, but it wasn't enough as the Hoyas fell 57-56 to the St. John's University Red Storm on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York. With the loss the Hoyas drop to 14-6 on the season and 4-5 in league play, while the Red Storm improve to 13-9 for the year and 7-3 in the conference.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "It's never a question of effort with this group, and I'm proud of them for that. But in this league, we can't just play hard we also need to play smart. We didn't play smart at times and, playing against a team that's 7-3 in the conference, you can't just play hard. This was a pivotal game that we had to take care of in the league, and we didn't play with a sense of urgency until the end. We need to do things that play to our strengths and, at times, we did that but at the end of the game we had just dug ourselves into too deep of a hole."
How it Happened
  • St. John's jumped out to the quick 5-0 lead, but the Hoyas would fight back, cutting it to one on two occasions which were both layups from senior Kelsey Ransom in transition.
  • A traditional three-point play by the Red Storm gave them some breathing room as GU clung to a two-possession differential for the remainder of the period.
  • At the end of one, SJU led 12-8.
  • The Red Storm built the lead to 10, 18-8, but Georgetown would not go away as  a jumper from graduate student Mya Bembry sparked a 10-0 run by the Blue & Gray to knot the contest at 18.
  • Georgetown would head into the break trailing by one, 23-22.
  • Early in the third quarter, a triple from graduate student Alex Cowan would tie it up at 25. However, St. John's staged the 14-3 run to regain the momentum.
  • SJU continued to push as the Hoyas struggled to score as GU looked at a 48-32 deficit at the end of the third.
  • The Blue & Gray would not give up, opening the final stanza with a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to nine and force a St. John's timeout.
  • In the final three minutes of the contest, Georgetown would continue to fight putting together a 12-2 run including five points from graduate student Graceann Bennett and a triple by Ransom with one tick on the clock.
  • The comeback would fall just short, however, as St. John's held on for the 57-56 decision.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way for the Hoyas with 19 points and a team-high seven assists as well as three rebounds.
  • Bennett managed 10 points and six rebounds, while Scott posted eight points to go along with six boards.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 48.0% (24-50) from the field, and Georgetown allowed 41.5% (22-53) shooting by the Red Storm.
  • GU outrebounded SJU 31-28, and Georgetown forced 11 Red Storm turnovers on three steals.
  • Unique Drake scored 18 points, while Jillian Archer and Ber'nyah Mayo managed 11 points apiece as the three St. John's players in double figures.
