Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Falls at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the Seton Hall University Pirates 71-54 on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, New Jersey. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 14-7 on the season and 4-6 in league play, while the Pirates improve to 13-8 for the year and 5-5 in the conference.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We just didn't defend tonight, and when we don't defend we aren't playing Georgetown Basketball. They scored right out of the gate, and we didn't defend. We can't go point-for-point with teams, we have to defend and then on offense we have to take our shots. Now we have a day off and then we need to clean the slate, regroup and get ready for our next game. There is still a lot of season left, but we need to focus on our defense and playing Georgetown Basketball."
How it Happened
  • Seton Hall jumped out to a quick lead, as the Hoyas struggled to find the bottom of the net.
  • An 8-0 Pirate run over three minutes put SHU up 11, but a bucket in transition by graduate student Mya Bembry cut it to nine 17-8 at the end of one quarter.
  • The Blue & Gray cut the deficit to seven on a layup at 8:11 from graduate student Graceann Bennett, but Seton Hall answered right back with a commanding 14-2 run.
  • The lead built to as much as 20 in the second quarter, and the Hoyas trailed 38-19 at the break.
  • Seton Hall would move ahead by 26, but five points from graduate student Alex Cowan sparked a 14-0 run for the Hoyas who would not go away.
  • The Hoya defense was huge, holding Seton Hall scoreless for 5:44 and cutting the deficit to 12.
  • At the end of the third, Georgetown had cut it to 51-37.
  • The momentum would shift back to the Pirates in the fourth quarter, and the comeback would never come for the Hoyas.
  • Georgetown eventually fell, 71-54.
Of Note
  • Bembry led the way for the Hoyas with 12 points against her former team as well as five rebounds.
  • Cowan was the other Hoya in double figures posting 10 points and a team-high eight assists in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 40.8% (20-49) from the field, and Georgetown allowed 50.0% (24-48) shooting by the Pirates.
  • GU outrebounded SHU 31-26, and Georgetown forced 11 Pirate turnovers on five steals.
  • Kae Satterfield scored 17 points, while Azana Baines added 14 as the two Seton Hall players in double figures.
