Hoyas Win a Close One Against DePaul

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team managed to pull out the 44-42 victory against the DePaul University Blue Demons on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 15-7 on the season and 5-6 in league play, while the Blue Demons drop to 11-13 for the year and 3-8 in the conference.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Players play, tough players win, teams play, tough teams win, they figure it out. We found a way to win when things weren't going our way and I'm proud of each and everyone one of our players for that. We did have some success, we dominated the glass and Graceann Bennett did a great job holding (Anaya) Peoples below her average. Mya Bembry came up big again with a double-double and then Brianna Scott going to the line and making two clutch free throws. Kudos to our staff and players, but now we need to get ready for Marquette."
How it Happened
  • DePaul scored first, and the teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter.
  • A triple from the Blue Demons at 2:04 gave DePaul the 11-7 advantage as both squads went cold to close out the first period.
  • The Blue & Gray opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from junior Brianna Scott and giving GU the 14-13 lead.
  • The Blue Demons came back with a 7-0 run of their own to regain the advantage.
  • Georgetown trailed by seven with 2:37 remaining in the half, but finished off the quarter with three quick buckets including a steal from senior Kelsey Ransom that resulted in a layup from graduate student Mya Bembry.
  • That scoring spurt made it 23-22 in favor of DePaul going into the break.
  • The lead seesawed back and forth throughout the third period.
  • Both squads went cold for the final 3:09 of the quarter until a Blue Demon triple beat the buzzer to put DePaul ahead 36-31 after three.
  • Bembry continued her strong week scoring the first four points of the fourth and sparking an 8-0 as Georgetown took the 40-36 lead forcing a DePaul timeout.
  • The Blue Demons answered back to knot it at 40 with 5:33 remaining as it would be a battle down the stretch.
  • DePaul held the one-point lead going into the final minute, but a free throw by graduate student Graceann Bennett tied it once again at 42 with 38 seconds remaining.
  • The defense got the stop, and the last second play sent junior Brianna Scott to the line where she sank both to put the Hoyas ahead 44-42 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Bembry and Bennett led the way for the Hoyas both tallying double-doubles with 12 points apiece. Bennett pulled down 13 boards, and Bembry managed 10.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 34.0% (17-50) from the field, and Georgetown allowed 29.8% (17-57) shooting by the Blue Demons.
  • GU outrebounded DePaul 43-36, and Georgetown forced 11 Blue Demon turnovers on four steals.
  • Anaya Peoples was the lone DePaul player in double figures with 10 points in the game.
