Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 19 Georgetown Downs UConn 1-0

WASHINGTON - The No. 19 Georgetown University men's soccer team came away with the 1-0 win over the UConn Huskies on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Connecticut. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-3-4 overall and 3-1 in BIG EAST play to tie for top of the BIG EAST East Division. The Huskies drop to 7-2-3 on the year and 2-1-1 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "UConn is a really good team this year, so going into their place and finding a way to take three points is a real accomplishment that we won't undervalue. I thought UConn was the only team on the field for the first 20 minutes until (Matthew) Van Horn's goal which really settled us. The goal aside, Van Horn had a great game and dug us out of some tough spots really tilting the field in our favor. But we can't discount our six defenders that saw the field, they've allowed one goal in the last six games and shown some impressive front to back defending that I'm really proud of."
How it Happened
  • UConn was on the offensive early, putting pressure on the Hoyas.
  • The game settled down until 15 minutes in when UConn had a shot from close range that was stopped by the hands of GU junior keeper Tenzing Manske.
  • Despite the momentum, it was GU that struck first as junior Zach Zengue sent it to classmate Max Viera up the left sideline. He took it himself and found sophomore Matthew Van Horn who fired to the back post and connected to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute.
  • Minutes later, Manske was tested again as he came up with another big stop to keep the Blue & Gray on top.
  • From that point on, the Hoyas began to control the pace of the game and went into the break leading 1-0.
  • The second half saw chances, but neither team managed to break through.
  • In the opening minute, a shot from graduate student Marlon Tabora deflected off of the crossbar.
  • A GU goal was called back, midway through the half as the Hoyas managed to hold on to win 1-0.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot UConn, 12-11, and had three shots on goal to the Huskies' trio.
  • The Hoyas were awarded four corners to UConn's five.
  • Manske took the win and shutout in the net with three saves in the game, while Max Kerkvliet had two.
  • The UConn loss was the first Husky defeat in conference play this season.
