No. 14/19 Georgetown Shut Out DePaul 4-0

WASHINGTON - The No. 14/19 Georgetown University men's soccer team shut out the DePaul University Blue Demons 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-3-5 overall and 5-1-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons drop to 5-7-3 on the year and 1-4-2 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Scoring seven goals over the past two games is certainly nothing to complain about. A lot of our guys had really good performances today, Zach Zengue with three assists was setting the table for a lot of guys. It was great to get all of the seniors on and, to be fair, see the seniors play so well. The biggest thing is to get the three points to clinch a home game for the quarterfinal, that was fundamentally the goal going into BIG EAST, and we've succeeded."
How it Happened
  • DePaul had the first chance of the match as GU keeper Tenzing Manske came out of the box and the Blue Demons shot at the open net which went wide.
  • From that point on, the contest belonged to the Hoyas.
  • The first goal of the match came in the 21st minute when Zach Zengue sent the ball from midfield who found Mitchell Baker. The freshman sent it to Matthew Van Horn who took a touch around the defense and fired to make it 1-0.
  • In the 40th minute, a scramble in the box ended up at the feet of freshman David Urrutia who hit it to the far post and connected to put GU on top 2-0 at the half.
  • The Blue & Gray added a pair in the second half when Zengue was in the middle of the box and hit it out to senior Blaine Mabie who scored his second goal of the season in the 57th minute.
  • Just four minutes later, Zengue served in a ball on the corner kick and found the head of senior Maximus Jennings who rose above for the goal as GU took the 4-0 lead which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot DePaul, 28-7, and had eight shots on goal to the Blue Demons' one.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 11 corners to DPU's six.
  • Manske took the win and the shutout in the net with one save, while Santiago Davila took the loss with three saves in the contest.
  • It marked GU's 10th shutout of the season.
  • With the win, the Hoyas have secured a first round home game in the BIG EAST Championship which will begin on November 9.
