Second-Half Barrage Push Hoyas Past No. 21 Friars

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team used three second-half goals to blank the No. 21 Providence College Friars 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-3-3 overall and 2-1-0 in league play, while the Friars drop to 6-3-2 on the year and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "The great thing about today was that we performed against a really good team. Providence is one of the top teams in the league and is competing to be a seeded team in the NCAA Tournament. We executed a lot of things really well today, and the guys didn't panic about not capitalizing on the first-half chances. It was great to see three goals go in the back of the net, but I thought it was a great performance overall."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown came out of the gates firing with a pair of looks in the first minute that the Friars were able to stop as Lukas Burns came up with a save.
  • The flurry of the first two minutes included two shots on goals and three corners as the Blue & Gray were knocking on the door early.
  • Providence settled the game and had looks, but GU keeper Tenzing Manske was not forced to make a save.
  • The teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The Friars had the first chances of the second half as the GU defense was on its heels.
  • The Blue & Gray answered by taking over with sustained possession and looking dangerous.
  • In the 63rd minute, GU got on the board as junior Zach Zengue laid the ball off to graduate student Marlon Tabora. He took it to his left and fired past Burns to put the Hoyas on top 1-0.
  • Just 35 seconds later, Georgetown added another when senior Joe Buck sent a perfect ball up the field to freshman Mitchell Baker. He took a quick touch and got it to Zengue who found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
  • The floodgates opened as Georgetown made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute as a Max Viera shot was saved, but the rebound fell to sophomore Matthew Van Horn at the far post who buried it.
  • The 3-0 score would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Providence, 21-7, and had nine shots on goal to the Friars' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded seven corners to Providence's one.
  • Manske took the win and shutout in the net with two saves in the game, while Burns had six.
