Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Fall at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a 79-61 decision to the University of Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 1-1 for the young season, while the Badgers improve to 2-0 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We had some key mishaps in the third quarter, we had a key mishap at the end of the first half and those gave Wisconsin momentum. We can't give a team like that momentum on their home floor. This was a good game for our freshmen to learn what it's like to play college basketball at this level. Kudos to Wisconsin, they did a good job of going to their strengths and they took advantage of that. We don't get to fail, we're going to get better, and then we're going to move on and get ready for Temple."
How it Happened
  • The lead went back and forth early on as neither squad could take control.
  • A jumper from graduate student Kelsey Ransom put the Hoyas ahead, but Wisconsin managed to stay within a possession for much of the period.
  • With three minutes to play in the quarter, freshman Jaeda Wilson sparked a 4-0 run, but the teams would trade triples down the stretch.
  • Late free throws put the Hoyas on top 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Ransom kept the Blue & Gray on top for much of the second period until five quick points with three minutes left gave the Badgers the advantage.
  • A jumper from graduate student Siobhan Ryan and a triple from Wilson gave the lead back to GU and the Hoyas would hold on despite a late bucket from UW to make it 33-32 at the break.
  • Ransom dominated the third quarter, but UW had an answer for every bucket as it remained just a one-possession game through the first five minutes.
  • Late in the period, Georgetown led by three, but a 7-0 Badger run made it 54-50 in favor of the home team at the end of three.
  • Wisconsin would build its largest lead of the game 60-53, forcing a GU timeout early in the fourth quarter.
  • The momentum would never swing back to the Hoyas as GU could not find an answer eventually falling 79-61.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the Hoyas in all categories with 27 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
  • Wilson was second tallying nine points in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 39.3% (22-56) from the field, but allowed the Badgers 50.0% (32-64) shooting.
  • GU was outrebounded by UW 40-33, and Georgetown forced 11 Badger turnovers on seven steals.
  • Ronnie Porter scored 26 points to lead four Badgers in double figures.
