Hoyas Defeat Owls, 65-51

WASHINGTON. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team downed the Temple University Owls 65-51 on Tuesday evening in a nonconference battle at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Owls drop to 2-2 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I think once we locked in, we did a great job in the first half of making sure we made everything tough for them. It took everybody and a lot of communication to get those stops when we needed them. We did a great job in the third quarter, and were able to break the game open. I'm proud of the group for that effort. Kelsey (Ransom) was great today, it was a big sister performance, where she showed up when the kids were in trouble and she made a few plays. She's one of the best players to play here, and she continues to show that every single day. It's because of her work ethic, it's because of her character, it's because she does things that other people don't want to do. She doesn't care about a mistake, she moves on to the next play, and she gets it back on the other end of the floor. I think she's tremendous, and she did a tremendous job leading us today."
How it Happened
  • Temple scored first, but the Blue & Gray used a balanced attack to take the lead on a free throw by graduate student Kelsey Ransom.
  • The Owls would battle back to knot it at nine and force a GU timeout. Out of the break, a pair of free throws by senior Ariel Jenkins put GU back on top.
  • A late effort from Ransom including a jumper from the elbow at the buzzer made it 16-11 after the first quarter.
  • Junior Victoria Rivera hit a triple to open the second period, but Temple would come back to cut it to four.
  • An 11-4 run to close out the half, including six points from Ransom and another 3-pointer by Rivera, gave the Blue & Gray the 30-19 lead at the break.
  • Temple opened the second half on a 6-0 run, but Ransom stopped the momentum with a 6-0 run of her own to push the advantage back to 11, 36-25.
  • The duo of Ransom and Rivera was unstoppable on offense and GU managed to get stops on the other end as the Blue & Gray led 46-33 at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Hoyas were on fire in the fourth, with a trio of triples from senior Ariel Jenkins, freshman Jayden McBride and Rivera ballooning the lead to 22 and forcing a TU timeout.
  • Temple would never find an answer as GU cruised to the 65-51 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the Hoyas with 28 points to go along with seven rebounds, five steals and five assists.
  • Rivera was second tallying a career-high 19 points in the contest, while Jenkins managed her first-career double-double posting 11 points and 11 rebounds which was also a career high.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 41.8% (23-55) from the field, and allowed the Owls just 27.9% (17-61) shooting.
  • GU was outrebounded by TU 43-36, and Georgetown forced 18 Owl turnovers on nine steals.
  • Anissa Rivera scored 16 points as the lone Owl in double figures.
