Bearcats Edge Hoyas at Atlantic Slam W

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - The Georgetown University women's basketball team saw a comeback fall just short on Friday evening as the Hoyas dropped a 59-57 decision to the University of Cincinnati Bearcats in the first game of the Atlantic Slam W at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 2-2 on the season, while the Bearcats improve to 4-1 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We just have to learn how important it is to not give up second-chance opportunities and to protect the ball. I think the turnovers and the second-chance points for Cincinnati helped them get over the hump. They went on some runs and hurt us because we didn't get enough looks at the basket. But now we need to regroup and get ready for a different type of team. We'll be fine. We just need to regroup and prepare for our next opponent."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas came out red hot with a pair of triples and a traditional three-point play to go up 9-2.
  • However, an 8-0 Bearcat run put Cincy on top before junior Victoria Rivera knocked down a three to answer.
  • Four quick points by graduate student Kelsey Ransom got it closer, but Cincinnati would lead 17-16 after the first period.
  • Rivera hit a triple to open the second quarter which sparked a 14-2 Hoya run including nine points from Ransom as Georgetown led 30-19.
  • Cincinnati would not go away, answering with a 12-3 run to close out the half as GU clung to the 33-31 advantage at the break.
  • Midway through the third quarter, the Hoyas were leading by two before a 10-0 Bearcat run forced the Blue & Gray to use two timeouts to stop the momentum.
  • Cincy would lead by 10 going into the final minute of the third, but a layup from senior Ariel Jenkins cut it to single digits to make it 49-41 after three periods of action.
  • The fourth quarter began with a layup from Jenkins as the Hoyas chipped away at the deficit.
  • Midway through the period, a 7-0 run including a Jenkins triple at the end of the shot clock cut it to two, 53-51.
  • Cincy answered, but a steal from Ransom and a 3-pointer by Rivera cut it to one with 59 seconds left.
  • The Bearcats knocked down two from the charity stripe, and even a deep three from Rivera wasn't enough as GU fell 59-57.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the Hoyas with 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds for the double-double. She also had six assists.
  • Rivera scored 17 points going 5-10 from beyond the arc, while Jenkins managed nine points, a career-high 12 rebounds and four blocks in the game.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 46.5% (20-43) from the field, and allowed the Bearcats just 29.9% (20-67) shooting.
  • GU outrebounded Cincy, 40-32, but the difference was on turnovers where the Hoyas committed 25 and the Bearcats had just six.
  • Jillian Hayes scored 28 points with 11 boards, and Chloe Mann added 15 points as the two Bearcats in double figures.
  • The Hoyas were playing shorthanded with five players out due to injury.
