Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "This is what nonconference is, it's preparation for BIG EAST play, and we need to make sure we're taking care of the little things and the details. Those things are important when we're going into battle against good teams. Cincinnati and Florida Gulf Coast are good teams that will finish well in their conferences. If we want to be one of the perennial powers in our conference, we have to come with it every single day no matter who is out there. So what we're going to do, we're not going back to the drawing board, we're going back to being us, but we have to be a better us. That means paying attention to the details, executing on the offensive end and limiting our fouls. If we can do that, we'll be good to go."
How it Happened
- Georgetown opened the scoring as graduate student Kelsey Ransom hit a jumper in the lane, but the Eagles started out hot from beyond the arc and quickly gained a small lead.
- Looking at a four-point deficit, a jumper from senior Ariel Jenkins sparked an 11-2 run to close the quarter on top 21-16.
- FGCU continued to hit from downtown and started the second quarter with an 11-0 run to force a Hoya timeout.
- Jenkins ended the run with a layup on the next possession, and two free throws coupled with a triple from freshman Jayden McBride cut the deficit to four, but a late Eagle bucket kept FGCU up at the half 34-28.
- Jenkins and junior Victoria Rivera combined for a 9-0 run early in the third quarter as Georgetown regained the lead on a Rivera triple 37-36, forcing an Eagle timeout.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers from FGCU would follow the break as the Hoyas kept it a two-possession game, but trailed 46-43 after three quarters of action.
- As the shorthanded Hoyas fought, the Eagles were able to build the lead to as much as 10 midway through the fourth.
- Georgetown would just never find its way back, eventually falling 66-57.
Of Note
- Jenkins led the Hoyas with a career-high 22 points to go along with nine rebounds to lead the Hoyas in both categories.
- Ransom had 12 points, and Rivera added 11 to round out those in double figures.
- The Blue & Gray shot 41.1% (23-56) from the field, and allowed the Eagles to shoot 49.0% (25-51).
- GU was outrebounded by FGCU, 35-28, and forced 15 Eagle turnovers on four steals.
