Hoyas Stifle Wagner 66-41

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University defense held the Wagner College Seahawks to 41 points, coming away with a 66-41 victory at McDonough Arena on Tuesday night. With the win, the Hoyas jump to 5-1 while the Seahawks fall to 3-4 on the season.

ON THE RECORD
"I definitely challenged our guys the last couple of days to continue to grow defensively. A lot of our efforts have been on defensive fundamentals. I? saw Jayden Epps make another leap today defensively. I think Micah Peavy showed the way and I thought Thomas Sorber played his best college game today offensively, defensively, with his passing energy and as a rim protector. I really liked our defensive attention to detail tonight. Wagner is older than us and they are a really well-coached and experienced team. We knew we had a challenge on our hands and I was really proud of our men and the way that we defended with a purpose. Hopefully we can continue to grow from there." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"We were getting good stops in the first half and I felt like we were forcing them to miss shots, but they were getting a lot of offensive rebounds. So in the second half when we held them to one shot, we were able to play in transition, and once we played in transition, everybody got in a rhythm and a great flow. That's when we started making shots." - Malik Mack

"The energy in McDonough Arena is different. We love everyone coming out to Capital One Arena, but McDonough just makes me feel like I'm back at home and playing in front of my family. The energy in McDonough is very exciting in a different way." - Thomas Sorber

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started as a back-and-forth affair as the teams traded buckets through a 10-10 tie with 12:32 remaining in the first frame.
  • With GU struggling to hit from the floor, the Seahawks took a 12-10 advantage. However, a four-point play from Mack who drained the triple, drew the foul and made his free throw, gave the Hoyas the 14-12 lead. The Hoyas followed it up with a stop on the other end to swing the momentum in their favor.
  • Every time the Blue & Gray inched forward, Wagner found a retort, pulling within one (19-18) with 5:39 remaining. Georgetown closed the frame on a 9-2 run fueled by four points from Mack and featuring an emphatic Jordan Burks dunk off the Peavy block and steal. The Hoyas took a 28-20 lead into the locker room.
  • The Blue & Gray continued to reel off unanswered points into the second half, holding the Seahawks scoreless through more than eight minutes in the stanza, taking a commanding 46-20 lead behind a balanced attack.
  • Georgetown poured the points in the second frame, leading by as many as 36 (65-29) before running away with the 66-41 victory.

OF NOTE
  • Georgetown's stifling defense held Wagner scoreless for 11 minutes and 46 seconds of action from 3:44 remaining in the first half until 11:58 in the second half.
  • The Hoyas held the Seahawks to 20 points in the first half, tied for the fourth-lowest output this season.
  • Allowing just 41 points for the game, it is the fewest points allowed by a Georgetown team since January 31, 2015 when the Hoyas upended Creighton 67-40.
  • Tonight marked the lowest shooting percentage from a GU opponent since Coppin State (27.3%) on December 8, 2020 in an 80-48 victory. The Hoyas held Wagner to 28.0% (14-50) shooting.
  • Tonight marked Peavy's fourth five-steal game of his collegiate career.
