WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team downed the Virginia University Lynchburg Dragons 88-31 on Wednesday evening in the squad's 2024-25 opener at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas start the season with a 1-0 record, while the Dragons drop to 0-1 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney on What to Take Away From a Big Victory
  • "One of the things that we talk about every day is that we aren't playing the opponent, we play against ourselves. We have a set of standards and a set of goals on the board every game and, win or lose, we have to hit those standards. Now usually when we hit our standards, regardless of the opponent, we win. We make sure our players aren't worried about the score or the opponent, they're worried about our standards and how we can meet our expectations."
How it Happened
  • Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Kelsey Ransom opened the scoring as GU started with an 11-1 run.
  • Lynchburg's first field goal of the contest came at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter, but Georgetown answered right back on a triple from junior Modesti McConnell.
  • The Blue & Gray capped off the period with a 3-pointer from junior Victoria Rivera to make it 22-4 after 10 minutes of action.
  • Four quick points from Ransom began the second quarter, but the Dragons managed to get some buckets as they stopped the Blue & Gray advantage from ballooning past 30.
  • In the final minute of the first half, freshman Jaeda Wilson sank a pair of free throws as Georgetown led 41-15 at the break.
  • Free throws from Ransom and a triple by Rivera put GU up 46-15 coming out of the half, however, the Dragons answered back with a 3-pointer of their own.
  • All four of Lynchburg's buckets in the third would be three's, however, the Hoyas continued to build the lead on the strong play of Rivera, freshman Khadee Hession and senior Ariel Jenkins to lead 70-27 at the end of three.
  • A quartet of triples from Ransom, Rivera, freshman Alexia Araujo-Dagba and McConnell began the final stanza as GU continued to build the lead.
  • The Hoyas would go ahead by as much as 58 on a field goal from Jenkins in the final two minutes, and Georgetown secured the 88-31 result at the buzzer.

  • Rivera was one of five Hoyas in double figures with a career-best 19 points including a 5-of-9 performance from beyond the arc.
