Fourth-Quarter Explosion Leads Hoyas Past Musketeers

WASHINGTON - A dominant fourth-quarter performance led the Georgetown University women's basketball team past the Xavier University Musketeers 64-41 on Monday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while the Musketeers drop to 5-8 on the year and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Tonight was just a testament to us going back to our roots and making sure we locked up and played Georgetown defense. We got some stops late, and we got some rebounds late which both really helped us. I thought Ariel Jenkins was key defensively. She did a great job of rebounding the ball and guarding their post players, and then shout out to Siobhan Ryan who came in and did a great job on the defensive end, and in turn, she ended up making some big plays for us. I was proud of how we ended the game."
How it Happened
  • Despite a sloppy start for both squads, Georgetown put together a 7-0 run to open the contest.
  • The dominant play of senior Ariel Jenkins down low made the difference as she pulled down rebounds and hit from the line.
  • A late layup gave Xavier momentum as GU ended the first quarter leading 14-9.
  • Both teams were quiet to start the second quarter, until Xavier exploded with a trio of triples to take the 22-20 lead with 2:44 to go in the half.
  • A floater by Ransom as well as a free throw put the Blue & Gray back on top. A jumper in the lane from freshman Khadee Hession made it 25-22 at the half.
  • Xavier opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take the lead, 31-27.
  • The Blue & Gray answered with a 7-0 run including a triple from Jenkins, but an XU bucket knotted the contest at 33.
  • The lead went back and forth, but late points from junior Victoria Rivera and graduate student Siobhan Ryan gave GU the 41-37 advantage heading into the final stanza.
  • The fourth quarter belonged to the Hoyas as the squad used a nearly five-minute stretch to stage an 11-2 run to take the 52-41 lead and force a Xavier timeout.
  • The timeout did not stop the Hoya momentum as GU outscored Xavier 23-4 in the final quarter to cruise to the 64-41 victory.
Of Note
  • Jenkins led the way with an all-around performance and her fourth double-double of the season posting 22 points and 14 rebounds as well as three steals and one assist.
  • Ransom was also in double figures scoring 14, while Rivera had 11 and Hession rounded it out with 10 points in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 38.2% (21-55) from the field, and held the Musketeers to 35.4% (17-48) shooting in the contest.
  • Georgetown outrebounded XU, 41-24, and forced 15 Musketeer turnovers on 11 steals.
  • Loren Christie scored 12 points as one of two Musketeers in double figures.
