Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rivera’s Three Halts Spider Win Streak

RICHMOND, Va. - With one second on the clock, junior Victoria Rivera's 35-foot 3-pointer was what the Georgetown University women's basketball team needed to complete the comeback and defeat the University of Richmond Spiders 55-53 on Wednesday evening at the Robins Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Hoyas handed the Spiders their first loss of the season using a huge second-half push. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Spiders drop to 8-1 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I'm just extremely proud of us sticking to the game plan, even though shots weren't falling for us in the first half. We stuck to the game plan, played Georgetown Defense and made sure that we keyed in on the stuff that we need to kill. You know, I'm proud of Kelsey for being a leader. I'm proud of our freshman Jaeda Wilson for her effort. I'm proud of all of them, they stuck to the plan and relied on each other. In the end, we got the stops we needed and then that's just a huge shot by Victoria Rivera. But she had practiced that shot at shootaround earlier today, so she was confident. Richmond is a good program, they're well coached and really tough so I'm just proud of our group tonight."
How it Happened
  • Richmond jumped out to a small lead, but the Hoyas answered with back-to-back triples from junior Victoria Rivera.
  • The Spiders would come down and hit a layup before holding onto a small 14-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Spiders maintained control throughout the second quarter as the Blue & Gray struggled to score.
  • GU's points all came on a 7-0 run midway through the quarter, but Richmond came back to take the 24-17 lead into the half on a late 6-0 run.
  • Richmond led by as much as ten at the 6:04 mark in the third, but the Blue & Gray did not give up.
  • A layup from senior Ariel Jenkins sparked a 15-0 Hoya run as Georgetown closed out the quarter with a jumper from graduate student Kelsey Ransom to lead 37-32.
  • Ransom and Jenkins were dominant in the final stanza as a Ransom free throw put GU on top at the 8:05 mark.
  • The Hoyas built the lead to as much as six, but with three seconds to go, a Richmond layup put the Spiders up by one.
  • Georgetown advanced the ball and set up the inbounds play which went to Rivera at the logo. She fired with one tick on the clock and sank it to give the Hoyas the lead.
  • Richmond's final shot went in, but it was after the buzzer as the Hoyas held on for the 55-53 victory.
