Hoyas Down Colgate in Coaches vs. Racism Roundball Classic

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team never trailed in a 71-57 win over the Colgate University Raiders in the Coaches vs. Racism Roundball Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-3 on the season, while the Raiders drop to 6-3 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Today, we did a good job of attacking and getting to the free throw line. I thought our young guards did a good job against their pressure and we got the ball in some good positions. We just need to finish a couple more plays, and we will be just fine. I think, all in all, today was a good job by our group, I'm proud of them. Now we'll rest for a day and then get back to it since we play on Monday. We'll be ready to go."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead to start the game fueled by four points from senior Ariel Jenkins who was dominant down low.
  • Colgate cut it to five, but the Hoyas answered right back as GU led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Early in the second, the Raiders heated up from downtown knocking down a quartet of 3-pointers through the first eight minutes.
  • Georgetown didn't panic and matched the squad with layups and free throws on the other end as the Hoyas went into the half with a comfortable 34-22 lead.
  • The Blue & Gray looked to be running away with it early in the third, but Colgate came back managing an 8-1 run to make it a 10-point game. Junior Kaliyah Myricks and graduate student Kelsey Ransom answered with seven quick points to take the Raiders out of striking distance.
  • A late 11-0 Georgetown run would put the Hoyas on top 61-37 going into the final period.
  • Colgate began the fourth with a renewed energy and tried to make a game of it with an 18-4 run to cut it to 65-55.
  • At the 2:41 mark, junior Victoria Rivera hit back-to-back triples to give the Hoyas some breathing room and seal the 71-57 victory.
Of Note
  • Rivera led the Hoyas with a career-high 21 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
  • Ransom managed 19 points, while Jenkins rounded out those in double figures with her second double-double of the season scoring 16 points to go along with 12 boards.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 43.5% (27-62) from the field, and held the Raiders to 38.8% (19-49) in the contest.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Colgate 39-29, and forced 13 Raider turnovers on five steals.
  • Taylor Golembiewski scored 14 points as the lone Raider in double figures.
