Georgetown Falls to George Mason

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in a close one to the George Mason University Patriots 63-55 in a local showdown on Monday evening at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 6-4 on the season, while the Patriots improve to 9-1 on the year.

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but Mason answered right back with an 8-0 run to take the lead.
  • The play of senior Ariel Jenkins down low put the Blue & Gray back on top, but the Patriots would come back with another 8-0 run.
  • A triple from junior Victoria Rivera late in the first kept it close as GU trailed 19-15 after one.
  • The Hoyas stayed close through the second quarter before a layup from graduate student Kelsey Ransom and the traditional three-point play by Jenkins knotted the contest at 25.
  • GMU answered on the other end, but Ransom put together a 7-0 run on her own to give GU the lead. A triple in the closing seconds of the first half tied it at 32 going into the break.
  • Both squads went cold for much of the third quarter, and free throws allowed Mason to cling to a small advantage as the Patriots led 46-42 at the end of the period.
  • The tandem of Jenkins and Ransom cut the lead to two midway through the fourth quarter.
  • However, Mason punched right back putting together a 7-0 run to get some breathing room.
  • Georgetown would not find its way back as the Hoyas eventually fell 63-55.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the Hoyas with 28 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Jenkins dominated down low posting her third double-double of the season with 19 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 40.0% (22-55) from the field, and held the Patriots to 30.2% (19-63) in the contest.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded by George Mason 44-40, and forced nine Patriot turnovers on three steals.
  • Zahirah Walton scored 23 points as one of three Patriots in double figures.
Up Next
  • Georgetown will open BIG EAST Conference play on Sunday as the squad travels to No. 2 UConn to take on the Huskies at XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • The contest is a rematch of last season's BIG EAST Championship game between the Hoyas and Huskies.
