WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter push to defeat the Providence College Friars 54-44 on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 16-8 on the season and 6-7 in league play, while the Friars drop to 11-14 for the year and 5-7 in the conference.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "They went on a run because we went outside of our game plan. When that happens, teams are going to score on us. We expect teams to go on a run, so we just need to withstand it and play Georgetown basketball. I keep say, it's a thing, it's a system. It's a spirit, it's got a soul to it. We're excited about the win tonight and I'm so proud of Kelsey and this entire group."
How it Happened
- The first quarter belonged to the Hoyas as the defense held PC without a field goal until the final minute of the period.
- Georgetown was able to build a solid lead thanks to skilled play down low as the Hoyas led 13-3 at the one-minute mark thanks to six points from senior Kelsey Ransom and three by graduate student Mya Bembry.
- Bembry would add a late layup to make it 15-5 at the end of one.
- The Hoyas controlled the pace thanks to the tandem of Ransom and Bembry, until late in the second quarter when Providence staged a 9-3 run to make it 24-20 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the break.
- Providence came out fired up in the third period scoring six quick points to take a two-point lead and force a Hoya timeout.
- The play of junior Brianna Scott was a spark for the Blue & Gray, before a late steal and layup from Ransom regained the lead for the Hoyas 33-32.
- The squads would end the third knotted up at 35.
- The lead swung back-and-forth in the final period, before back-to-back triples from Ransom and graduate student Alex Cowan as well as a jumper by Ransom put the Hoyas ahead 46-39 and forced a Providence timeout.
- The defense would stand strong down the stretch, and Georgetown pulled out the 54-44 victory.
Of Note
- It was a dominant performance by Ransom who led GU with 22 points, two assists, two steals and a block as the lone Hoya in double figures.
- Graduate student Graceann Bennett led the Hoyas with eight rebounds and added six points.
- The Blue & Gray shot 31.0% (18-58) from the field, and Georgetown allowed 30.8% (16-52) shooting by the Friars.
