WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the St. John's University Red Storm 51-43 on Tuesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 17-10 on the season and 7-9 in league play, while the Red Storm drop to 15-13 for the year and 9-7 in the conference.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "We want to beat everyone we play, and St. John's is a really good team with some solid players and a great coach. We came out and didn't finish early, but once they started falling it eased our anxiety and we grew and got better from there."
How it Happened
- St. John's jumped out to a quick lead, but the play of graduate student Mya Bembry and junior Brianna Scott tied the game up late in the first period.
- With 28 seconds left, a layup from graduate student Graceann Bennett cut the deficit to two, but a triple by the Red Storm at the buzzer made it 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
- The squads traded buckets throughout the second stanza as GU would pull within one of four occasions.
- In the final minute of the half, the Red Storm managed a pair of jumpers.
- However, a layup from senior Kelsey Ransom at the horn put the Blue & Gray down three 23-20 after 20 minutes of action.
- Looking at a three-point deficit, a 5-0 run by the Hoyas gave GU its first lead of the game on a layup from Scott.
- SJU quickly answered, but a Scott triple at the end of the shot clock made it 34-33 in favor of the Hoyas.
- After three quarters of action, Georgetown held the 36-35 advantage.
- The Blue & Gray started the fourth quarter strong with an 8-2 run including a pair of jumpers from Bembry.
- St. John's attempted a comeback, but the Hoya defense got stops and managed to keep it a two-possession game.
- As the time wound down, the Red Storm could not find an answer resulting in the 51-43 final.
