WASHINGTON – Led by 31 points from senior
Kelsey Ransom, the Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Butler University Bulldogs 70-63 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. It marked Georgetown's home finale for the regular season. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 18-10 on the season and 8-9 in league play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 13-14 for the year and 5-11 in the conference.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "We didn't want to allow them to get 3-point attempts off, and we had some lapses early, but once we started getting it inside and forcing them to drive, our penetration defense was great and it made a difference. I'm just so proud of this group. Our leaders have put us in a good position, and as long as we continue to play Georgetown basketball I think we can have success heading into the postseason."
How it Happened
- The Bulldogs started out hot from beyond the arc, only hitting triples from the field in the first quarter.
- Butler led 9-2 before buckets from Ransom and graduate student Graceann Bennett cut it back to a three-point game.
- Looking at a 13-10 deficit with 3:15 to go in the first quarter, senior Jada Claude and junior Brianna Scott both knocked down shots and sophomore Victoria Rivera beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer on the break to give GU the 15-13 advantage.
- The Bulldogs continued to hit from long range, but five-straight points from Ransom put the Blue & Gray back on top.
- The lead seesawed back-and-forth for much of the second quarter, but another shot from Rivera tied it up at 33 going into the break.
- Both teams went on small runs in the third with neither able to pull away. A layup from Ransom and triple by junior Brianna Scott put GU up 48-44 which would be its largest lead to that point.
- Ransom took over late with steals on defense and layups on offense as the Hoyas held the 57-52 advantage after three.
- The senior continued to dominate in the final stanza as the Blue & Gray got some breathing room on a traditional three-point play from Ransom to make it 63-54 midway through.
- Both squads cooled off for the final minutes as it was a defensive battle. Butler made it a two-point game with 26 seconds to play, but Claude sank a pair of free throws as GU went back up by four.
- The 3-point attempt from Caroline Strande bounced out and BU was forced to foul as Georgetown hung on for the 70-63 victory.
Of Note
- Ransom led the way with a career-high 31 points including an impressive 13-of-14 performance from the line, as well as five assists, four steals and two blocks for the all-around performance.
- Bennett added nine points and as many rebounds to lead the Hoyas.
- The Blue & Gray shot 46.2% (24-52) from the field, and Georgetown allowed just 38.6% (22-57) shooting by the Bulldogs.
- GU outrebounded BU 34-32, and Georgetown forced 14 Bulldog turnovers on six steals.
- Riley Makalusky led Butler with 21 points, while Strande posted 12 and Jordan Meulemans added 11.
