Georgetown Drops Two at FGCU Kickoff Classic

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown softball team opened the 2024 season at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Florida on Friday. The Hoyas dropped the first game to Louisville (2-0) 4-1 before a 10-2 decision in the second contest against the host Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (1-2). With the losses, GU opens the season with a mark of 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A quiet first inning from both offenses was followed up by Louisville getting on the board first in the bottom of the second.
  • The Hoyas got their best opportunity to score in the top of the fourth. Pinch hitter Samantha Miller reached on an error and singles from Camryn Wincher and Maicie Levitt would load the bases. Two quick outs ended the inning.
  • Smart play from center fielder Claire Turner gave the Hoyas their first run in the fifth inning. Turner got on the board with a five-pitch walk, advancing to second on a sac fly and to third with GU's first stolen base of the year.
  • Gianna Scullio recorded a single up the middle with two outs to tie the game up 1-1.
  • Louisville struck back in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to regain the lead.
  • The Cards tacked on two more in the seventh to extend their lead to 4-1.
  • A pair of walks put two Hoyas on base to start the seventh, but Louisville brought in closer Izzy Harrison and was able to bounce back with three straight strikeouts to secure a win for the Cardinals.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Hoyas recorded seven hits, led by a pair apiece from Wincher and Levitt.
  • Gianna Sciullo tallied one RBI to lead the squad.
 
FLORIDA GULF COAST 10, GEORGETOWN 2 (6 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Turner walked to put a runner on first. Brooke Rebhan doubled down the right field line and the Hoyas had runners on second and third.
  • A single from Wincher pushed Turner and Rebhan across the plate before Wincher was thrown out at second to give the graduate student a pair of RBIs and the Hoyas a 2-0 advantage.
  • Florida Gulf Coast could not be contained however, evening the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
  • The Eagles tacked on one run each in the fourth and fifth before a commanding six-run sixth inning to seal the 10-2 victory.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Hoyas recorded four hits, led by a pair each from Rebhan and Wincher.
  • Wincher tallied a pair of RBIs while the pair of Rebhan and Wincher each recorded a double on the day.
 
UP NEXT
The Hoyas return to action in the FGCU Kickoff Classic with a pair of games on the schedule. Georgetown faces Boston College at 12:15 p.m. and will again face Louisville with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. in Fort Myers, Florida.
