Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 16/11 Georgetown Falls to Pitt in Season Opener

WASHINGTON - The No. 16/11 Georgetown University men's soccer could not find the back of the net falling 2-0 to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers in the 2024 season opener on Thursday at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Hoyas are now 0-1 on the season, while the Panthers start the year 1-0.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "When you're on the road against a good opponent in a big atmosphere, you need to finish your chances when you get them. We had some good looks and just didn't finish. In big games you need to be clinical so that's something we can work on. I was happy with the way we played in the second half. We were unlucky not to equalize and it was tough to give up a goal when we were playing so well. But tonight gave a lot of our guys important minutes. It's a game we can grow from. We have six or seven new starters on the field and it takes time to build those connections and relationships. This is a game to build off of for the next one."
How it Happened
  • Pitt held possession for much of the first half as GU registered just two shots and one on goal.
  • In the 27th minute, the Panthers got on the board as a ball was served into the middle of the box, and Albert Thornsen got a head on it to redirect the ball in.
  • Late in the half, a Panther cross was knocked out by Manke. The rebound was sent right back in, but sailed over the crossbar to keep it a one-goal game which would stand at the half.
  • With 20 minutes to go in the contest, the Hoya offense began to come alive.
  • A cross from freshman Mitchell Baker gave junior Max Viera a golden opportunity that went high. Soon after, Baker took it himself and saw his right-footed strike get stopped by the Pitt keeper.
  • Senior Joe Buck had his shot stopped in the 77th minute, but Pitt came back down and scored off of a solo shot from Luis Sahmkow.
  • The Blue & Gray would not find the answer as the Hoyas fell 2-0 at the final whistle.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot 10-7 and Pitt managed five on goal, while the Hoyas tallied just two.
  • Both teams earned two corner kicks apiece.
  • Junior Tenzing Manske took the loss in the net with three saves for the evening.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will stay on the road and will face local-rival Maryland on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
  • Live stats will be available on GUHoyas.com and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Plus.
