Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 16/11 Georgetown Blanks Maryland in Annual Derby

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 16/11 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a pair of early goals from freshman Mitchell Baker to defeat the University of Maryland Terrapins 2-0 in a local derby at Ludwig Field in College Park, Maryland on Sunday evening. The Hoyas are now 1-1 on the season, while the Terps start the year 0-1-1.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "This is such a fun venue to come play in because of the atmosphere, the crowd and the energy that Maryland plays with. Getting the early goals was obviously important to calm things. We saw Mitch Baker settle into the college game, I think he needed the Pitt game to understand the tempo and pace. Tonight, he did what he was brought in to do which is finish his chances and score goals. But the result was every bit as much about dealing with corners and blocking shots as it was about two great goals. It was really a team effort and great to get the first win of the year."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown found the back of the net early as Baker challenged the Terp keeper on a save resulting in a loose ball which Baker poked in. It marked Baker's first goal of his career and the first of the season for the Hoyas.
  • For the next few minutes, the Hoya defense and keeper Tenzing Manske were forced to come up with stops as the Terps came right back searching for the equalizer. Manske would stand strong and keep it scoreless.
  • In the 23rd minute, GU doubled it as Baker tallied his second in the match.
  • Senior Blaine Mabie went to the endline and sent a ball to the top corner of the box. A charging Eric Howard knocked it to the far post where Baker was waiting to tap it in making it 2-0.
  • The two-goal lead would stand at the break.
  • Both teams had chances in the second half, and the Hoya defense had to come up with some big stops to keep it scoreless.
  • At the final whistle, the Hoyas cruised to the 2-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot 13-10, but had five shots on goal to Maryland's three.
  • The Terps were awarded a whopping 13 corners to GU's four.
  • Junior Tenzing Manske took the shutout in the net with three saves for the evening.
