WASHINGTON - The No. 16/11 Georgetown University men's soccer team got a late goal from freshman
Mitchell Baker to defeat the UNC Greensboro Spartans 1-0 in Georgetown's home opener at Shaw Field on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Spartans move to 2-1 suffering their first loss of the year.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "There were some great performances today, it was a captain's performance for Maximus Jennings. He did some amazing things to snuff out issues in the box, and he did it on a yellow card but handled it well. Our old guys are playing old. Blaine Mabie and Joe Buck are doing a great job. Zach Zengue and Max Viera are finding their feet, Matthew Van Horn is becoming what we think he could be. It's the guys getting comfortable and growing up a little bit more. Every game from the three preseason games to the three regular season games the guys have gotten better at something. So as long as we continue to do that, we're optimistic."
How it Happened
- Georgetown was the dangerous team early on as shots from junior Max Viera and sophomore Matthew Helfrich tested the Spartan defense.
- The Hoyas dominated possession as UNCG registered no shots on goal in the first half.
- Despite GU's effort, the squad could not find the back of the net as the squads went into the break scoreless.
- Georgetown continued to be the better side in the second half, but Spartan goalkeeper Seth Wilson was a wall, stopping every shot and keeping it knotted at zero.
- With 15 minutes remaining, UNCG got some momentum and threatened with a number of dangerous shots and corners.
- Junior Zach Zengue had a near goal in the 36th minute as his free kick just outside the box was blocked by the wall, but the ball came back to him and his right-footed shot went just wide.
- The difference came in the 87th minute when Baker was able to break free past the defense on a long ball from Joe Buck. The keeper came out and stopped Baker's momentum, but the ball ricocheted in between the keeper and defender. Baker was able to get a foot on it, sending it to the far post to make it 1-0.
- In the final seconds, it looked as if the Hoyas would add one more when Zangue's shot from half field hit the crossbar, but upon review it was deemed in front of the line making the final 1-0.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot UNCG 20-4, and had six shots on goal to UNCG's zero.
- The Hoyas were awarded 10 corners to the Spartans' five.
- Senior Luca Ulrich took the shutout in the net despite no saves in the contest.
- It was a physical match with eight yellow cards assessed between both squads.
