Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas and Panthers Play to Scoreless Draw

WASHINGTON - The No. 16/14 Georgetown University men's soccer team tied the Florida International University Panthers 0-0 in a nonconference matchup at Shaw Field on Monday afternoon. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 0-3-1 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "It's a good sign when a tie feels like a loss, but FIU is a really good team and they're going to win a ton of games this year. They came in trying to slow and shorten the game, and it was hard to get in a rhythm in the first half. In the second half, the guys did a great job of generating chances and their keeper had to make some incredible saves. He made great saves, but we needed to finish better. It's a difficult sport to get right, but at the end of the day, this is the third shutout in a row and we're excited to keep getting better."
How it Happened
  • FIU attempted to disrupt Georgetown's possessions early in the contest before the squads settled in and the Blue & Gray took control.
  • In the final 15 minutes, FIU began to look dangerous as the Panthers tested the Hoya defense and the Blue & Gray couldn't find their shape.
  • With six minutes remaining, GU had its best chance of the half as a header from freshman Mitchell Baker went just wide of the post. Neither team would find the back of the net as they went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The Hoyas had a golden opportunity in the 53rd minute as Jack Heaps was freed on the left side but his shot was saved by keeper Nigel Van Haveren. The rebound went to junior Zach Zengue who fired, but Van Haveren dove to get a paw on it. Zengue got one more chance on the open net but his shot was just wide of the goal.
  • In the final 10 minutes, Georgetown pushed for a goal while playing a man up after an FIU red card but the keeper continued to stymie the Blue & Gray.
  • No one would find the answer as the contest ended in a scoreless draw.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot FIU 23-11, and had nine shots on goal to the Panthers' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 12 corners to Florida International's eight.
  • Junior Tenzing Manske took the shutout in the net with two saves in the game, while Van Haveren had nine..
