WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Creighton University Bluejays 1-0 on Friday evening in Omaha, Nebraska at Morrison Stadium. It marked the first BIG EAST Conference contest for both squads. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-2-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Bluejays drop to 4-2-2 for the year and 0-1 in the conference.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Creighton is arguably the best venue in college soccer. It's a carnival-like atmosphere, coming to a venue like that and picking up three points is incredibly difficult to do. A game like this was also super timely for our team. We needed this win at this point in the season, and I couldn't be happier with our effort tonight and ability to find a way to win. Our defense was immense. Tenzing (Manske) seems to thrive in hostile environments, and he was super steady all night. I thought the back four did a great job in general showing a calm demeanor in moments that can rattle even the best defenders. Overall, it was great to get three points on the road."
How it Happened
- Creighton had the first good look as Georgetown keeper Tenzing Manske sprawled to his left to make a save off of the Bluejay header early in the match.
- Midway through the contest, Mathew Helfrich would take it down the right side and send it in forcing Blake Gillingham to come off of his line for the stop.
- Later in the period, a golden opportunity from Max Viera was blocked as both teams searched for the first goal.
- The Bluejays once again looked dangerous out of the half.
- Twenty minutes in, captain Blaine Mabie had an open shot from the top of the box that went just left of the post.
- The game would change in the 70th minute when freshman Mitchell Baker found sophomore Matthew Van Horn in the middle of the pitch. Van Horn beat three defenders and fired low to the far post, bearing Gillingham and making the score 1-0.
- In the 81st minute, Manske came up with a huge stop for the Hoyas as he dove right. On the next play, defender Maximus Jennings pushed a dangerous ball out as GU clung to the lead.
- The GU defense would stay strong as the Blue & Gray held on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
- Georgetown was outshot by CU, 15-11, and had just four shots on goal to the Bluejays' seven.
- The Hoyas were awarded four corners to Creighton's eight.
- Manske took the win in the net with six saves in the game, while Gillingham had two.
- Van Horn's goal was the first of the season and the second of his career.
