Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Blank Princeton, 2-0

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team used goals in the first and 90th minute to shutout the Princeton University Tigers 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Shaw Field in a nonconference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-2-3 overall, while the Tigers drop to 2-3-0 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "We started the game really well, the first 20 minutes was very, very good. Obviously scoring an early goal and a late goal were great, almost bookending the game, but when you play a team like Princeton that has real threats and pace who are good on setpieces you need to be consistent. I was happy with what we generated and that we managed the moments of defending. The team worked really hard today and it was important to get the shutout."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown got on the board in the first minute of action when junior Max Viera dribbled through the defense and slipped it to sophomore Matthew Van Horn who found the back of the net for the second-consecutive match to give the Blue & Gray the early 1-0 lead.
  • Van Horn had another good look that was stopped, but GU continued to push, searching for a second score.
  • Midway through the first half, a Princeton shot from close range forced junior goalkeeper Tenzing Manske to his knees to make the stop and keep the Hoyas on top.
  • The Blue & Gray were able to hold on in the first and went into the locker room up 1-0.
  • In the first minute of the second half, freshman Mitchell Baker had another good look, but it was saved by Princeton keeper Khamari Hadaway.
  • Throughout the second half, Georgetown defended through a number of opportunities by the Tigers.
  • As the rain came down harder, the Hoyas managed to stop a barrage of shots and in the last minute, sophomore Jack Heaps went 1v1 with a Princeton defender and buried his first-career goal to make the final 2-0.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Princeton, 17-11, and had seven shots on goal to the Tigers' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded six corners to Princeton's eight.
  • Manske took the shutout and the win in the net with two saves in the game, while Hadaway had five.
  • Van Horn's goal was the second of the season and the third of his career.
  • Heaps' goal was the first of his career at Georgetown.
  • The Hoyas scored in the first and last minute of action in the contest.
