COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Georgetown University's field hockey team earned its second win of the season with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over visiting LIU in the 2024 home opener on Sunday. The Hoyas improve to 2-5 overall while the Sharks fall to 2-4.
Sydney Yodh and
Izzy Lee both had a goal and an assist for the Hoyas while
Sophie Towne netted the game winner.
Lily Jamison and
Colleen Maloney were both credited with assists on the day as well.
Towne's game-winning goal at the 53:17 mark put the Hoyas up 3-2 and sparked a frenzy down the stretch. LIU pulled its goalie following a green card on Georgetown with 4:07 to play while a yellow card against the Hoyas gave the Sharks a brief three player advantage. During that span, LIU earned two penalty corners but couldn't convert on either as the Blue & Gray's defense held tight to seal the win.
Georgetown got on the board first with Yodh converting a penalty corner courtesy of assists from Jamison and Lee. The Sharks responded with back-to-back goals 97 seconds apart but wouldn't score again the rest of the way.
Lee's equalizer in the third quarter came from a perfectly placed pass from Maloney at the baseline, finding the sophomore all alone at the top of the circle before firing home her first career goal.
In goal,
Bailey Tietz (1-0) made her first start of the season and earned five saves in the win, all coming in the second half.
Kiki Bruning and Kiley Hosler both had lone goals for the Sharks.
Georgetown remains home and hosts UConn in BIG EAST action on Friday, September 27 at noon. All home games for the Hoyas will be played at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Maryland.
