Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Down Providence, 60-48

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Providence College Friars 60-48 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Alumni Hall in Providence, Rhode Island. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-9 on the season and 2-5 in league play, while the Friars drop to 9-12 on the year and 2-6 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "That first quarter was amazing, but we have to make sure that we continue to follow the game plan. Early on, the game plan is fresh in their head, but when fatigue and mental fatigue set in that gets in the way. So some of the shots that we're hitting early, we have to make sure that we are saving our legs to make some of those shots late. But overall, I'm really proud of our defensive effort. I'm proud of us showing what Georgetown basketball is all about defensively, everything starts with what we do defensively. Shout out to Kaliyah Myricks, she was amazing today going to get offensive rebounds and just doing a great job for us. Ariel Jenkins was awesome, Victoria Rivera was awesome and Kelsey Ransom showed us why she's the defensive player of the year."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown opened the game on a 12-0 run as senior Ariel Jenkins scored the first two buckets, and junior Victoria Rivera followed up with back-to-back triples.
  • A Providence three didn't slow the Blue & Gray as Jenkins knocked down a quartet of free throws and freshman Jayden McBride hit a pair of 3-pointers.
  • At the end of the first quarter, Georgetown held the commanding 24-10 lead behind the play of Jenkins.
  • Providence was the hot team in the second quarter, as the Friars cut the lead to five midway through the stanza.
  • The duo of Jenkins and freshman Khadee Hession slowed the momentum as the Blue & Gray led 35-26 at the break.
  • Georgetown maintained the double-digit lead for much of the third quarter.
  • Graduate student Kelsey Ransom heated up late in the stanza as she scored nine of GU's final 10 points to make it 52-37 after three.
  • Providence cut it to nine early in the fourth quarter, but a big put back from senior Kaliyah Myricks and a 3-pointer by Rivera gave the Hoyas some breathing room as GU held on for the 60-48 victory.
Of Note
  • Rivera led the way with 19 points, going 5-7 from beyond the arc.
  • Jenkins was dominant down low posting 16 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She was also an impressive 6-6 from the charity stripe.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 36.4% (20-55) from the field, and allowed the Friars 37.0% (20-54) shooting in the contest.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Providence, 39-29, and forced 15 Friar turnovers on seven steals.
  • Grace Efosa and Nariah Scott scored 10 points apiece to lead the Friars.
