Hoyas Hold On to Down St. John’s

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team got a last second layup from Kelsey Ransom to defeat the St. John's University Red Storm 56-54 on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-9 on the season and 3-5 in league play, while the Red Storm drops to 11-8 on the year and 1-7 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I was proud of our defensive effort the first three quarters, but we had some mental lapses in the fourth. Those mental lapses allowed them to come back in the game, and it was frustrating that they happened on both ends of the floor. I think our mental stamina has to be better, but I'm proud of us for pulling out that win. I'm excited about our group. I think our team is learning on the fly, especially the young players, and we will just continue to move forward."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown was dominant in the first quarter as the Hoyas opened the contest on an 8-3 run.
  • St. John's cut it to two, but the Blue & Gray answered right back on a triple from freshman Khadee Hession which sparked a 7-0 run.
  • The Hoyas held the 17-8 advantage after the first.
  • Two quick buckets began the second quarter for the Red Storm, however, Ransom took matters into her own hands and went on a 6-0 solo run to build the lead to 11.
  • Ransom and senior Ariel Jenkins combined late as the Hoyas led 27-14 at the break.
  • St. John's would not find a way back in the third stanza, as Jenkins controlled the paint going a perfect 4-4 in the quarter.
  • At the end of three, GU maintained a comfortable 42-27 lead.
  • Junior Victoria Rivera heated up in the final period, knocking down back-to-back triples.
  • But the Red Storm would not go away, staging a late 14-0 run to knot the game at 52 with 2:13 to play.
  • It was Ransom who would play the hero as she put the Hoyas on top with a layup with three seconds to go as Georgetown pulled out the 56-54 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 28 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the line.
  • Jenkins was dominant down low posting 14 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. She was also an impressive 7-8 from the field.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 44.2% (23-52) from the field, and held the Red Storm to just 37.7% (20-53) shooting in the contest.
  • Georgetown outrebounded St. John's, 31-27, and forced 18 Red Storm turnovers on five steals.
  • Kylie Lavelle scored 15 points to lead the Red Storm as one of three players in double figures.
